White desert, full moon — the Rann in winter
1,180 km across Gujarat to ride the salt flats under a full moon. Flat, fast, and quietly one of the strangest landscapes I have ever stood in.

After a year of mountains I wanted the exact opposite: no altitude, no switchbacks, nothing to climb. The Rann of Kutch is as flat as India gets — a salt marsh the size of a small country that dries into a white crust every winter and floods again with the monsoon.
Getting there
The ride down was all highway and I let Basanti eat it in long, boring, wonderful stretches. Ahmedabad to Bhuj in a single day, most of it at a steady 90, the kind of riding where your mind goes quiet and the only decisions are fuel and food.
The white desert
You time a Rann trip to the full moon for one reason: the salt flats at night look like nowhere on earth. White ground, black sky, a moon bright enough to ride without a headlight. I stood in the middle of it at 1 a.m. and could not tell where the ground ended and the horizon began.
What surprised me
I expected the landscape. I did not expect Kutch itself — the embroidery villages, the Rabari herders walking camels along the highway shoulder at dawn, the best dal I have eaten anywhere. The salt flats are the headline. The people are why I'd go back.
